The Funston Project features a classic 1940s home with occupant comfort issues stemming from an improperly insulated bonus room with drafty knee-walls. These attic knee-walls are among the most commonly under-insulated areas in today's homes and routinely cause high utility bills and low comfort levels.
Using more modern insulation methods, Powerhouse was able to air seal the existing attic walls as well as provide adequate insulation levels to increase energy efficiency and occupant comfort. PowerHouse is also insulating areas that were previously exposed including the basement walls and spray foaming the rim joists.
Often, the simplest items such as insulation can provide the greatest return on investment, and can be easily applied to fit in to any budget. By using the existing utility rebates, state and federal tax credits the Funston family is expected to save over $800 on their project, as well as over $220 a year on their utility bills.
